Thierry Paquot

Thierry Paquot is a professor at the Institut de l'Urbanisme de Paris urban planning school and teaches at Paris XII university. The publisher of a magazine, Urbanisme, and producer of the "Côté ville" radio show on France Culture, he has written and collaborated on a number of publications, including Petit manifeste pour une écologie existentielle, Bourin Editeur 2007, and Utopie et Utopistes, La Découverte 2007. He focuses on green urban planning and what makes an ideal city.

Ideal City

There is no one but rather several models of the ideal city. Nevertheless, in the West and especially Europe, Thierry Paquot suggests that an ideal city would be one in which walkers and bicyclists could move about freely. This would strongly signal a society able to alter its relationship with time by accepting everyone's individual pace.

Green City

Over the last few years, the term "sustainable development" has gained currency everywhere. Thierry Paquot prefers the notions of urban ecology or green urban planning, the meaning of which becomes clear if we consider the origin of the word ecology: namely, knowledge of the oïkos, or household. All of us, not just authorities, must cultivate environmental awareness in cities.
